Primary Responsibilities

The primary duty of the CFD Engineering Analyst Lead is to develop and lead modeling efforts using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software that will optimize building designs, deliver key insights, and solve unique and complicated challenges. At this role, the individual shall build relationships within the HDR matrix, understand where CFD modeling can be applied to solve technical problems, and independently execute projects. 

 Specific duties include:

  •  Taking a lead role in delivery and project management to optimize facility design, with a focus on Data Center modelling using Ansys Fluent, CFX and 6Sigma.
  •  Leveraging experience and networking to work with the HDR business groups and external clients to solve complex projects using CFD.
  •  Ensuring identification and pursuit of new business opportunities where appropriate with existing and new clients.
  •  Assessing the development and deployment of computational modeling tools and capability for analyzing and delivering high performance and informed building environments.
  • Presenting and representing HDR at technical conferences.
  •        Supporting proposal development for CFD scope.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • An Energy / Physics / Mathematics related Bachelor's degree, or equivalent in a relevant subject and desirable to have a CFD / Engineering / Physics / Mathematics related Master's degree, or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • A minimum of 10 years of CFD modeling experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of modeling experience with the Cadence Reality (6Sigma) or Ansys Fluent software.
  • A track record of successfully delivering projects related to:
    • Data center cooling and optimization
    • Indoor temperature / thermal comfort studies
    • Outdoor thermal comfort / UTCI studies
    • Natural Ventilation studies
    • Wind-driven envelope infiltration studies
    • Outdoor air intake / exhaust separation studies
    • Fire, Life, Safety, and Tunnel Ventilation Systems
  • Provide technical and project management to ensure modeling projects are completed within project parameters and exceeding client expectations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and team working skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics enabling understanding of the appropriate application of CFD modeling in relation to transient vs steady state, turbulence model complexity, radiation modeling, modeling of particulates / scalar transport amongst other considerations.
  • Working knowledge of other software such as, Autodesk CFD, CoolSim, MicroFlo, SimCenter STAR-CCM+, IES (EMEA).
  • Previous experience leading/performing CFD modeling for Data Center clients.
  • Previous experience managing staff, clients, contractors, and staff for an engineering consulting firm.
  • A strong understanding of ASHRAE Standards and Guidelines.
    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architectural Engineering or closely related field
    • A minimum of 7 years experience
    • Demonstrated practical experience, competence and proven expertise in evaluating state-of-the-art building designs and energy-efficiency technologies
    • Thorough understanding of mechanical systems and controls and knowledge of the specialized requirements of highly technical facilities such as hospitals and laboratories
    • Ability to develop detailed energy models with eQuest or other simulation software
    • Experience working within the architectural design process
    • Understanding of energy-efficient commercial lighting systems
    • Availability to travel out of state
    • Excellent presentation skills with the ability to speak with confidence to building owners, facility personnel, contractors, architects and engineers
    • Excellent writing and documentation skills
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs
