HDR is currently seeking a Civil Designer. The successful candidate will be involved in design, modeling and drawings preparation, and will work closely with a multi-disciplinary project team to create high-quality design solutions.

Reporting to the Civil Engineering Lead, theCivil Designer is a member of the integrated project team that contributes site civil engineering knowledge and analysis to the project during the design and construction phase of our work. The project mix varies across building and infrastructure projects, including new residential and commercial developments, data centers, health facilities, industrial and waste management facilities.

The role involves working on multi-disciplinary projects with project sites in various locations across North America, including GTA and western Canada.

In the role of Civil Designer, we'll count on you to: 
 
  • Work on the Civil Models with no direction from the Engineer or other technical professional
  • Be responsible for civil discipline model and generate the BIM elements, based on the Digital Delivery Plan (DDP) and project scope
  • Create and maintain the civil model, systems, content, and overall digital delivery output 
  • To be skilled with the software used to produce the designs identified in the Digital Delivery requirements
  • Have mastered civil discipline and how it interacts with other discipline designs
  • Have an advanced understanding of engineering/architectural documentation for all disciplines
  • Prepare detailed drawings, layouts, & diagrams of the design within the project scope, schedule, and budget, using the current 3D software
  • Coordinate the design with other discipline models through Design Reviews and 3D Coordination processes
  • Execute all Digital Delivery requirements identified on the project
  • Contribute to the development of the business class digital needs
  • Work closely with Civil Engineering Lead, Project Managers, Project Engineers and a multi-disciplinary design team on a daily basis
  • Support the design and production of site civil construction documents
  • Model and draft site civil designs in Civil 3D, including site layout, grading, drainage, stormwater management systems, roadway, and site utilities.
  • Model both gravity and pressure pipe networks
  • Support the development of construction drawing packages in Civil 3D to ensure the files and plans adhere to HDR and/or client CAD standards
  • Prepare detailed drawings, layouts and diagrams of the design within the project scope, schedule and budget using the 3D software
  • Demonstrate an understanding of site civil design concepts including earthworks, surfaces, site grading and pipe networks
  • Coordinate the design with other discipline models through Design Reviews and the 3D coordination process
  • Mentor junior civil designers and co-ops

Selection Process: Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a Civil 3D skills assessment to demonstrate their proficiency with Civil3D software focused on typical civil/roads project workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years related industry experience
  • Competency of Microsoft Office products and communication tools
  • Good understanding of civil design concepts, industry standards and practices
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the municipal infrastructure design
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D and MicroStation
  • Proficiency with gravity and pressure pipe networks modeling
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, and collaboration skills
  • Leadership and mentoring skillsets are essential
  • Autodesk Civil 3D certification
  • OpenRoads experience
  • Revit experience
  • Experience with municipal clients in Ontario 

 

Other job details

  • Compliance with HDR and, as applicable, contractor safety policies and procedures
  • Potential attendance at job sites to support design and construction activities

 

 

Required Qualifications
  • Technical degree or a minimum of 3 years related industry experience
  • Technically qualified with 3D design software and document management infrastructure 
  • Competency of Microsoft Office products and communication tools
  • Experience with 3D Coordination tools
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and organizational traits are essential
  • Intermediate understanding of engineering or architectural concepts
