The electric energy industry is rapidly changing.  The increasing commissioning of variable energy resources combined with carbon reduction pressures and increasing demand are requiring bold evolutions from the power generation industry of the past.  Power generation fleets are forced to rapidly change to meet lower cost and lower carbon emission initiatives. At the same time, our power generation clients are rapidly expanding beyond traditional providers to include developers and distributed generation owners. 

HDR is seeking a strategic-minded Power Generation Practice Leader to partner with our clients to sculpt their strategies around diversification of their power sources for the next generation.

Primary Responsibilities 

The Power Generation Practice Leader is a global role and part of the overall Power leadership team at HDR. The primary responsibilities of this role include: 

  • Develop growth strategies, set goals, and drive results for HDR’s power generation practice of the future.  These actions are achieved through HDR’s matrix structure with partnership with peer practice and technical leaders in hydropower, renewable generation, power delivery, and grid modernization.
  • Collaborate with peer leaders in business lines across the engineering and architecture business lines at HDR.
  • Represent HDR as our power generation lead in the industry.  This includes meeting with key clients, attending industry conferences, and as a thought leader in technology development circles. 
  • Nurture relationships with clients to understand the challenges facing them as they map out the future of their power supply needs.
  • Create a cohesive practice across multiple offices and multiple disciplines that support implementation of power generation technologies. Build and maintain unity around long-term strategies with diverse teams.
  • Establish and drive objectives that support the HDR annual and the five-year strategic plans for the power generation business.  This includes client development, strategic recruitment initiative and client satisfaction.
  • Partner with HDR stakeholders and clients to explore and execute on various capital deployment models.
  • Strategy development and implementation for teaming partner relationships and selection of partners that enhance HDR’s market position.
  • Supporting staff development.  Assess HDR’s current power generation staff and partner with leadership to position HDR’s talent to match the needs of the future through leadership development programs.
  • Participate in power market sector efforts such as strategic planning initiatives, business development, and internal operations synergies to maximize client satisfaction and HDR success.
  • Partner with HDR operations leadership to develop and deliver on strong staffing and financial strategies.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of strategic leadership experience focused on growing, developing and leading teams to provide solutions for a variety of power and energy clients.
  • Minimum of 15 years of overall experience providing diverse power generation solutions and services to the industry.
  • Strong brand recognition in the power industry.
  • Track record of presenting at conferences and representing a company in the power generation industry.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in related field
  • Maintains a professional or Engineering registration and has related technical experience
  • Experienced in development and management of diverse teams
  • Works cooperatively with other business class directors, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
