HDR is looking for a Sr. Structural Engineer to join our growing and nationally ranked team. The successful candidate will be a part of a team that provides design support for large, medium, and small-scale engineering projects. This is an excellent growth opportunity for a self-directed individual who wants to take on new challenges within a team environment.

The position is within HDR’s Building Engineering Services (BES) Group with primary involvement related to vertical and building construction. 

HDR’s BES Group manages projects, but its primary focus is to provide design support to HDR’s other business groups. The responsibility for this position focuses on load-bearing columns, shear walls, foundations, and water retaining structures. Representative projects include water and wastewater treatment facilities; general buildings to support our municipal and private clients; electrical power distribution and transmission; and solar facilities.            

Involvement includes mild reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, precast concrete, structural steel, timber and masonry, and collaboration with the design team to ensure the design integrates with the building’s aesthetic and functional requirements. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Primarily support HDR's Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas area; Position can function from any of the following HDR office locations - Louisville, Elizabethtown, Paducah, Lexington in Kentucky; Nashville, Memphis, and Chattanooga in Tennessee
  • Design and plan production related to commercial and industrial projects 
  • Perform complex assignments exercising judgment in evaluation, selection and modification of standard engineering techniques and procedures 
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in an area of specialization that resolves problems of greater scope and complexity as needed
  • Limited travel
  • The goal is to build a structural team within the office and serve as the section supervisor; Initial involvement will include staff recruitment and mentoring
  • Client management and program development within the Structural Section
  • Understand and participate in HDR's work-sharing culture amongst other offices

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience as it relates to building design
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar analytical software
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts
  • Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry and wood
  • Requires understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
