HDR Engineering is currently seeking multiple Substation Project Managers/Team Leads to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in Texas. Locations include Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, Austin, Round Rock, San Antonio and Houston.
Primary Responsibilities
As part of a well-established Power Delivery practice in Texas, you will have the opportunity to build and lead your own team of Substation design professionals while managing Substation projects in Texas and beyond. You will likely have prior experience managing and providing technical leadership on small/medium projects and are now ready to take-on a broader role overseeing all aspects of larger and more complex substation projects. Additionally, you will have the desire and drive to grow a high performing team to help execute these projects.
As a Substation Project Manager/Team Lead your role will encompass the following:
- Managing and leading substation projects throughout the entire project life cycle, including scope and/or proposal development, project team development and assignment, project execution, project closeout, quality control, schedule, and budget management.
- Working independently and/or directing, mentoring, training, and/or supervising one or more Project Engineers, EITs, Designers, CADD Technicians and administrative staff.
- Leading the QA/QC process on projects per HDR’s Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements with a commitment to delivering world class quality.
- At times, being responsible for overseeing non-engineering components of projects, including public involvement, environmental permitting, right of way acquisition, construction management, and other services.
- Building, developing and supervising a local substation team and providing oversight over workload, quality, utilization, team morale, training, and performing annual performance reviews of team members.
- Leveraging existing staff across the company to execute work and deliver world class services to clients in the Texas region.
- Performing client management, project management, staff supervision, and/or technical support activities.
- Coordinating with HDR’s Talent Acquisition team and leadership to develop a hiring plan to help build and grow a group of substation professionals.
- At times, supporting and engaging in broader business development activities with existing and target clients in the region.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil or Electrical preferred).
- PE license and with the ability to obtain a Texas PE within 6 months.
- A minimum of 10 years or experience with 5+ years of substation design experience
- Strong client and project management skills.
- Previous experience managing and supervising staff.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned
Preferred Qualifications
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or ability to obtain it within 6 months, together with experience using project management tools, such as MSProject, a plus.
- Ability to effectively understand and apply many of the following project management concepts is strongly preferred: project life cycle, contract terms and project risk, work breakdown structures, project scope/schedule/budget, project initiation, project planning, financial management and controls, including earned value, internal/external communication, team management, change management, and project closeout.
- Experience and client relationships in Texas considered a strong advantage.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
- Master's degree considered a plus.
- Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams; regional, department, and technical managers; and project staff preferred.
- Experience with transmission, distribution, communication, and system protection and planning projects, as well as public involvement, environmental permitting, and real estate acquisition considered a plus.
- Experience working with Renewables developers and/or the interconnection of Renewables a plus.
