The Role
We're seeking a Technical Director - Electrical Engineering to play a key role within HDR's Australian Electrical Engineering practice, part of our broader Building Engineering Services (BES) business.
This is a senior leadership role responsible for guiding the growth, capability and technical excellence of our Electrical team. You will combine strong technical expertise with people leadership, helping to shape team culture, mentor engineers, support project delivery and drive the ongoing development of our electrical practice.
You will work closely with project leaders, business leaders and technical specialists to ensure HDR continues to deliver high-quality electrical engineering solutions across a diverse range of sectors.
This opportunity is ideally suited to an experienced engineering leader who enjoys developing people, building high-performing teams and influencing technical outcomes across a portfolio of projects.

What You’ll Be Doing
As a senior member of our BES leadership team at HDR, you will:
People Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor and develop a growing team of electrical engineers across varying levels of experience.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, technical excellence and continuous learning.
- Support workforce planning, recruitment and succession planning activities.
- Provide coaching, performance feedback and career development guidance.
- Build technical capability across the business through mentoring, training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Champion employee engagement, wellbeing and team culture.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical leadership and guidance across electrical engineering projects.
- Serve as a recognised subject matter expert across LV, MV and HV electrical systems.
- Support engineers in solving complex technical challenges and making sound engineering decisions.
- Promote consistency, quality and best practice across project delivery.
- Contribute to technical reviews, design assurance and quality management processes.
- Help maintain and develop engineering standards, tools and methodologies.
Business & Project Support
- Support project teams in the successful delivery of electrical engineering projects.
- Collaborate with discipline leaders across HDR to deliver integrated multidisciplinary outcomes.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
- Contribute to business development activities, proposals and strategic pursuits.
- Support the growth and positioning of HDR's Electrical Engineering practice within the market.

Ideally, You’ll Have
- A degree qualification in Electrical Engineering.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or equivalent.
- 15-20+ years of electrical engineering experience within consulting, infrastructure, utilities, energy, buildings, industrial or related sectors.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing engineering teams.
- Strong technical knowledge across electrical engineering systems, including LV, MV and HV infrastructure.
- Experience supporting complex multidisciplinary engineering projects.
- Strong understanding of Australian standards, regulatory requirements and industry best practice.
- A track record of mentoring and developing engineers at various career stages.
- Experience participating in recruitment, workforce planning and capability development.
- Strong client relationship and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience contributing to business growth, strategic initiatives and operational performance.
